What is the reggio emilia approach

The Reggio Emilia Approach recognizes all children as competent, capable, and co-constructors of their learning. The basis for development In the early years is a child’s ability to collaborate with their environment and community members, all while using The Hundred Languages available to them. These Hundred Languages include various outlets of self-expression and learning such as

  • Exploration of Open-ended/Sensory-rich Materials
  • Engagement with Movement & Dance
  • Dramatic and Imaginative Play
  • Investigation of Art Mediums (e.g. Paint & Clay)
  • Construction/Deconstruction of Blocks & Loose Parts

At We Skoolhouse, the curriculum is thoughtfully designed to cater to the holistic developmental needs of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, offering a dynamic and enriching learning experience. We prioritize a progressive approach that lays the foundation for lifelong learning and empowers children to thrive in the 21st century. Here’s a closer look at the philosophy that inspires our curriculum:

Reggio Emilia Philosiphy

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia Philosophy

Our curriculum is deeply inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which embraces the belief that children are:

  • Competent & active participants in their learning journey.
  • Capable of constructing their own knowledge.
  • An integral part of their surrounding community.

Why We Like This School of Thought

When implementing a progressive, child-centered model, children will:

  • Be intrinsically motivated and actively engaged in their learning.
  • Embrace critical and creative thinking that will prepare them for academics and a technology-driven future.
  • Develop positive self-image, social skills, and relationships.

How This Informs Our Curriculum

We Skoolhouse believes that learning is not a “one size fits all,” but rather, children are born with unique approaches to learning. Therefore, the curriculum needs to be flexible and inclusive of various learning styles. Not only do we keep this at the forefront of our minds when creating curriculum, but we also provide abundant guidance and support for you, so you, too, have the necessary tools to recognize and expand upon those everyday teachable and meaningful moments. Our curriculum emphasizes:

Child-led Play

Unstrucured, Child-led Play

Unstructured, child-led play has a profound impact on children’s intellectual, emotional, physical, communicative, and social development. Through play, children follow their interests, make choices, and express themselves, laying the groundwork for creativity, problem-solving, and self- confidence.

Open-ended Materials

Open-Ended Materials

We place a strong emphasis on the use of open-ended materials, such as building blocks, art supplies, and natural elements. These materials offer limitless possibilities for creativity and imagination, inspiring children to think divergently and embrace their unique approaches to learning.

Repetition of Experiences

Repetition of Experiences

Repetition of experiences is crucial for building strong neural connections, consolidating learning, and enhancing memory recollection. Revisiting activities and experiences allows children to deepen their mastery and understanding while approaching experiences from different angles.

Why we Like this School of thought

The Reggio Emilia philosophy relies on children’s everyday curiosities, observations, and experiences to guide learning. When content is relevant and meaningful, it’s far more likely to spark engagement, in which natural learning occurs. The emphasis on community and interpersonal relationships highly affect social emotional development, which is the most crucial domain of development. The greater a child’s sense of security and belonging within their learning and living community, the more likely confidence, independence, and empathy will transpire.
